Mikel Arteta guided Arsenal to victory against Athletic Bilbao on his return to Spain as the Gunners began their Champions League campaign with a positive result.
Arteta’s side has been among the most active in strengthening their squad this season, which has raised expectations around their European prospects. Bilbao, one of Spain’s five representatives in the competition, entered the campaign without being regarded as a favourite, with many predicting their elimination during the league stage. Nevertheless, they are supported by a passionate fanbase that created a striking atmosphere from the very start of the match.
A Hostile but Inspiring Atmosphere
As the players walked onto the pitch, the intensity inside the stadium was immediately felt. Arteta acknowledged the significance of the moment and recognised that his team would need to withstand early pressure. Speaking to Arsenal Media, he said, “What an amazing place to play football. I must say, one of the greatest atmospheres that I’ve been in. We knew that the first 20-25 minutes it was going to be really tough, especially the way they played, it was so intense; a lot of direct players, a lot of duels. I think after that we started to grow throughout the game, and in the second half we were much more fluent, dominant, and looked much more of a threat. And at the end, the finishers, they made the impact for us to win the game, and overall, I’m very happy.”
His comments reflected both respect for Bilbao’s approach and satisfaction with how Arsenal adjusted as the game progressed. The ability to absorb the initial onslaught before gradually asserting control demonstrated the tactical discipline and composure required at this level.

Arsenal’s Growing Confidence
Arsenal’s eventual win highlighted their capacity to rise above difficult conditions and hostile crowds. The performance suggested that the squad has not only added quality but also resilience, key traits needed for a sustained run in the competition. The result will serve as encouragement as they prepare to face stronger opponents and a variety of styles in the coming weeks.
Arteta’s side has already shown that they are capable of handling pressure away from home, and this victory stands as an early indication that they can contend with the tactical challenges and psychological battles that define the Champions League.
