Arsenal fans are divided in opinion over the technical and on-pitch abilities of Spanish manager Mikel Arteta. This is simply because of the club’s inability to win a major trophy and their failure to sign the right players who will bring back the glory days.
For the third time in a row, Arsenal finished as runners-up in the Premier League last season. Although this has earned them a place in the UEFA Champions League next season, the lack of major titles calls into question the quality of players signed so far and the need to improve the current squad.
Over 700 million Pounds have been expended in the transfer window in 5 years, but the Gunners’ squad looked thin for most of last season. And to shape the squad for the new campaign, Arsenal must look ahead one year to ensure they are planning and preparing for what might come next season. If Arteta fails to win a title next season, there’s surely going to be a meltdown, a situation the club must avoid by all means.
The club have been linked to a couple of top-notch footballers, but no deal has yet materialised. Sesko, Gyokeres, Zubemendi have all appeared on the transfer radar of Arsenal, but the reports have remained as rumours.
When Arteta took over the reins of Arsenal in 2019, he inherited a squad that had players like Aubemayang, Lacazette, Xhaka and other top-notch footballers. While the backline of the squad appears strong and of high quality, there are gaps in the midfield and attack, and world-class footballers must fill the left wing and centre-forward positions to make the team more competitive.
Part of the undoing of Arsenal last season wasn’t just injuries to players like Saka, Odegaard and Havert but the dearth of goals. There was no player to fill in the centre-forward position when Haverts had an injury lay-off – Martinelli also compounded the woes of the club as he failed to up his game.
Arsenal’s new director of football Bertha is plotting a path through a summer window, but the fans want swift and decisive transfer business. Just as Man City, Liverpool and the top English clubs are already completing deals, those in charge at the club are condemned to reinforce the team before the start of pre-season games.
