Laura Wienroither joins Manchester City on permanent deal

As exclusively revealed by Arseblog News yesterday, right-back Laura Wienroither has signed for Manchester City on a permanent transfer. The Austrian joined City on loan for the second half of last season after it was made clear she did not figure in new coach Renee Slegers’ plans.

Wienroither signed for the Gunners from Hoffenheim in January 2022 and has the unique distinction of scoring for Arsenal before joining the club, scoring an own goal while playing for Hoffenheim against Arsenal in a UWCL group game (which Arsenal lost 4-1!)

Arsenal said, ‘In total, Laura made 51 appearances for Arsenal, scoring one goal. She won two League Cup titles during her time at the club, and made four appearances in our run to UEFA Women’s Champions League glory last season. Everyone at Arsenal would like to thank Laura for her efforts during her time with us and we wish her well for her next chapter.’

Wienroither’s Arsenal career was interrupted by an ACL rupture in May 2023 and by the time she returned to fitness, USWNT international right-back Emily Fox had been signed and Slegers prioritised the development of academy defender Katie Reid. Wienroither has signed a two-year deal with City.

Wienroither said, ‘I really enjoyed the last six months, I feel like I’ve settled in well. I really like the girls, I really like the staff. I think it’s a good group of people here. Everyone is just looking out for each other and I’m honestly so happy to be staying here.

‘So, when the opportunity came up that I can stay, I didn’t have to think twice, it was a no-brainer for me. I’m so happy to be finally here.’ Arsenal are currently at the Adidas HQ in Germany for a pre-season training camp and will play a BCD friendly against Frankfurt on Saturday lunchtime.
