A Premier League legend has heaped praise on Jurrien Timber, particularly for his performances since returning from a long term injury. The Dutch defender was sidelined for the entirety of his debut campaign for the Gunners, making only two appearances in 2023-24. An ACL injury was to blame, but the 24 year old has quickly become a mainstay in the starting eleven. Due to the nature of his injury, a gradual recovery period was expected and there were certainly fears of it having a profound effect on his game moving forward. Nonetheless, the former Ajax man came back better than ever and has remained on an upward trajectory ever since.
Jaap Stam full of praise
Former Manchester United and Dutch defender Jaap Stam was recently full of praise for his fellow countryman. As picked up by Voetbal Primeur, the legendary defender admitted that Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk is the best defender in the world, while subsequently revealing his admiration for Timber. He particularly praised his development following that ACL injury, saying: “When he went to Arsenal, you often heard: ‘Too young, do not do it.’
“I have enormous respect for what he showed there after his serious knee injury. Right wing, left wing, central, it does not matter. He is so good on the ball, positionally strong, quick, and powerful.”
Timber’s Arsenal rise
Jurrien Timber was signed in the summer of 2023 from Ajax. The then 22 year old came in with so much potential, which is why there would have been serious concerns over his long term injury. He featured more as a centre back during his time in the Netherlands, but he has established himself as a full back under Mikel Arteta. Capable of playing both full back roles superbly, Timber has become an important figure for Mikel Arteta. He has featured in every Premier League game so far, scoring a brace in Arsenal’s 5-0 win over Leeds and contributing an assist already. He made 48 appearances last term and has already equalled his goal tally, potentially signalling a more productive campaign ahead.
