Ødegaard Goes Level With Vieira For Most Arsenal Wins As Captain

Arsenal skipper Martin Ødegaard is now joint second with a club legend for the most Premier League wins as captain, following Arsenal’s hard-fought 1-0 victory over Manchester United.

The Gunners began their campaign with three points at Old Trafford thanks to a first-half strike from Riccardo Calafiori. It was not a performance to remember and the match could easily have produced a different outcome, but Mikel Arteta will be satisfied with the result in what was a difficult opening fixture.

Despite the collective struggles, a few individuals stood out, with Ødegaard covering more distance than any other player on the pitch. His energy and work rate were key in helping Arsenal grind out the victory.

Ødegaard Matches Vieira’s Record

The win also carried personal significance for the captain. According to the Premier League’s official account on X, Ødegaard has now equalled the legendary Patrick Vieira for the second-highest number of league wins as Arsenal captain.

Following the United match, the Norwegian stands on 71 Premier League wins, level with Vieira. It is an impressive achievement given the stature of the former midfielder. However, Ødegaard remains some way off Tony Adams, who holds the record with 130 league wins as Arsenal skipper.

Next Step Is Silverware

While Ødegaard’s tally highlights his consistency since taking the armband, he has yet to lift a major trophy as captain, aside from the Community Shield. Football is ultimately about silverware, and statistics alone will not define his legacy.

The midfielder has come close to winning the Premier League on two occasions, with Arsenal falling short after strong challenges. This season presents another opportunity, but performances will need to improve quickly if the Gunners are to end their wait for a league title under Arteta’s leadership.

What do you think Gooners, does equalling Vieira’s record prove Ødegaard is the right leader, or will he only be judged once he delivers trophies?
