Mikel Arteta’s long-standing admiration for Alexander Isak is well known, but Arsenal may now be too late to land their dream forward.
According to an exclusive by Mail Sport, Isak has informed Newcastle United of his desire to explore a move away this summer. The 24-year-old striker did not travel with the Magpies for their pre-season tour of the Far East, having picked up a thigh injury earlier this week. His absence coincided with growing reports that he is open to a transfer, prompting speculation that a move could now be on the cards.
Arteta’s Favourite Now Within Reach
Arsenal have held interest in Isak since before his move to Tyneside. The Gunners were heavily linked with the Swedish international during his time at Real Sociedad, and those links resurfaced earlier this year. However, Newcastle’s valuation of £150 million coupled with their reluctance to sell saw Arsenal look elsewhere.
Even before launching a formal attempt to sign Benjamin Šeško, who eventually remained at RB Leipzig, Arsenal had made Alexander Isak their top-tier dream. The north Londoners eventually turned their focus to Sporting’s Viktor Gyökeres, who is now set to join the Gunners following a €68.3 million agreement and pending medical.

No Room For Isak This Summer
While Isak’s potential availability may tempt some fans to reignite the call for his signing, the financial and squad implications of such a move now make it highly unlikely. Arsenal have already made significant summer investments and are not expected to commit another major outlay in this window.
Liverpool were rumoured to be preparing a record-breaking bid for the Swede, but instead prioritised Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike after failing to make progress. Isak still has three years remaining on his contract, and while Newcastle remain hesitant to sell, the combination of a sizeable offer and the player’s wishes may force their hand.
For Arsenal, this may be a case of what might have been. Unless there is a major shift in direction or a surprise exit, it appears Mikel Arteta’s dream signing will remain just that.
Your thoughts on Isak welcome in the comments.
