Saliba pulls out of France squad after ankle injury at Anfield

William Saliba picked up an injury against Liverpool on Sunday and has now pulled out of the French squad ahead of the international fixtures. The defender went off as early as the 5th minute, with Cristhian Mosquera coming on in his place. Despite losing the encounter, the absence of Saliba was not consequential. Nevertheless, the Frenchman remains a cornerstone of the Arsenal backline, which is why the club will be concerned by his injury. As a result of his ankle problem, the player has withdrawn from the French squad ahead of two World Cup qualifiers. The French FA confirmed his withdrawal via X, with Inter Milan’s Benjamin Pavard called up to replace him.

Arteta confirms Saliba’s issue in warm-up

Following the encounter, it became apparent that Saliba picked up his injury during the warm-up. Mikel Arteta confirmed it in his post-match press conference, revealing:
“He twisted his ankle during the warm-up, and he came in and he said he believed that he could carry on and play, but straight away in the first two actions. I could see that he could not cope, and we had to get him out unfortunately. But thank God we had Mosquera, which we put in for the first time in the Premier League. His debut, not expecting it at Anfield, and I think he was really, really good.”

Mosquera steps up on debut

Regarding Mosquera, it is safe to say that fans will not be too concerned by the injury to Saliba. The former Valencia man held his own against the Reds, impressing with his defensive contributions throughout the encounter. There were a couple of nervy moments, but it was an all-round excellent display from the Spaniard. He also appeared more adventurous with the ball than Saliba and is already proving to be a shrewd addition to the squad.

Given Saliba tried to soldier on, the injury will likely be a minor one. The timely arrival of the international break will provide the 24-year-old with the opportunity to recover in time for a continuing difficult run of fixtures, while the likes of Bukayo Saka, Ben White and Christian Nørgaard will also be pushing to feature.

Given Saliba initially got injured in the warm-up, should he have even started the encounter?
