Arsenal win Euro 2025 (kind of)

England Lionesses retained the European Championships with a dramatic penalty shootout victory against Spain in Sunday’s final in Basel. Having won the tournament on home soil in 2022, the Lionesses became the first senior England team to win a tournament on home soil and the first to retain a major trophy.

And Arsenal players had a massive role to play for both teams in the final. Arsenal’s Leah Williamson, captaining England to a major trophy for the second time and Alessia Russo started for England. Mariona Caldentey started for Spain and Mariona opened the scoring with a first half header. Chloe Kelly came on as a first half sub to replace the injured Lauren James. It was another Arsenal player who levelled the scores in the second half, with Russo heading home a Chloe Kelly cross.

Beth Mead and Michelle Agyemang also entered the fray during the second half. The match went all the way to a shootout and Beth Mead and Leah Williamson missed their spot kicks for England, as Mariona did for Spain. However, the winning penalty was slammed home by Gunners winger Chloe Kelly (incidentally, her shot registered at 110km ph, the fastest struck goal in the entire competition) to seal the title for England.

As well as Arsenal academy product Leah Williamson lifting the trophy, Arsenal academy product Michelle Agyemang won Young Player of the Tournament after the 19-year old scored late equalisers against Sweden and Italy during the knockout phase. A big congratulations to Arsenal’s six Lionesses Lotte Wubben-Moy, Leah Williamson, Beth Mead, Chloe Kelly, Alessia Russo and Michelle Agyemang and commiserations to Mariona Caldentey.
