Bukayo Saka delivered a positive verdict when quizzed about Viktor Gyökeres’ performance against Manchester United. The England international featured alongside Gyökeres and Gabriel Martinelli in Arsenal’s attacking trident as the Gunners started their campaign with a win.
Arsenal were nowhere near their best but they put in a resilient defensive display to secure a slender victory. The team lacked cutting edge in the attacking third, managing just three shots on target throughout the contest. Bukayo Saka and Martinelli offered very little on the flanks, while Gyökeres was left feeding off scraps. On the rare occasions where he was found around the box, he also struggled and could not manage a shot all game.
Saka praises Gyökeres despite struggles
Despite the Swede’s difficulties, Saka was left impressed with his contribution, highlighting how well he has integrated within the squad. Speaking after the game, as per Football London, he said:
“I was impressed with him and he battled for us. It was tough. There was a big battle up there. I thought he did well. His performance gives us something to build on and I am sure it will help him next week. He has slotted in well and so have the other guys.”
Saka also gave an honest assessment of Arsenal’s overall performance against United. He added:
“It was not a great performance. We are happy with the three points, to come away from Old Trafford with a win. We were not up to our usual standards, the basics, sloppy giveaways. Our decision making was not great and that cost us and gave United a lot of momentum. We did not get punished for it but we cannot do it every game.”

Arsenal must improve ahead of tough run
The Gunners will need to raise their level considerably if they are to emerge unscathed from their upcoming fixtures. Following the clash with Leeds on Saturday, Arsenal face Liverpool, Nottingham Forest, Manchester City and Newcastle. That run includes visits to Anfield and St James’ Park, two grounds where Arsenal failed to win last season.
The fact that Arsenal were below par yet still claimed victory should provide encouragement, especially considering Manchester United looked much improved from last season. An improvement is needed nonetheless.
Coming back to Gyökeres, he is expected to improve with time, but he could benefit from a more direct approach from Arsenal’s attack.
