Arsenal are pursuing the signing of Piero Hincapie in this transfer window, but progress on the deal has been slower than many supporters might have expected. The Ecuadorian defender is reportedly keen to move to the Emirates and has been prepared to travel to London to complete the transfer in recent days.
Hincapie linked to Kiwior’s departure
The Gunners’ interest in Hincapie is largely driven by Jakub Kiwior’s expected departure to FC Porto. The Polish defender has served primarily as a backup at Arsenal over the past few seasons and is seeking a new challenge where he can play regularly. Kiwior’s exit is seen as creating the perfect opportunity for Hincapie to join, but the move is contingent on multiple factors falling into place.
Arsenal are actively working to finalise terms, but the transfer is proving more complex than it may initially appear. Securing Hincapie will require negotiations with Bayer Leverkusen while simultaneously ensuring that Kiwior’s move to Porto is concluded to the satisfaction of all parties.
Complications explained
Journalist Charles Watts wrote on Caught Offside: “Arsenal’s interest in Piero Hincapie is directly linked to Porto’s attempts to sign Jakub Kiwior. The recruitment team are understood to view the Ecuador international as the ideal replacement for Kiwior, should his move to Portugal go through before the end of the transfer window. So a lot depends on whether Arsenal and Porto can agree the final details on a deal for Kiwior, but also on whether Arsenal can simultaneously find an agreement with Bayer Leverkusen that works for Hincapie. So at the time of writing this column it is still quite a complicated situation.”
Hincapie represents an ideal solution for Arsenal if Kiwior leaves, offering defensive solidity and versatility. However, the Gunners must ensure that they can complete his signing before allowing Kiwior to depart. The next few days will be critical as Arsenal aim to conclude all negotiations and strengthen their squad ahead of the new season.
