Arsenal have won the UEFA Women’s Champions League after beating Barcelona 1-0 in Lisbon. To repeat, ARSENAL HAVE WON THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE, as Stina Blackstenius scored the winning goal as a second half substitute. Arsenal were resolute defensively, and clinical, and have won the Champions League for the second time.
Renée Slegers made one change to the Arsenal team that beat Manchester United two weeks ago, with Daphne van Domselaar returning in goal, with Slegers sticking with her preferred eleven.
Arsenal started well without the ball, with Maanum, Foord, and Kelly snapping into challenges as Arsenal pressed. When Arsenal got the ball back, though, the final ball was off. The question, though, was how Arsenal would defend lower, with Pajor heading wide from Rolfö’s cross.
A long ball for Pajor caused issues. Catley attempted to clear, McCabe cleared backwards, Van Domselaar scrambled the ball away from Pajor, and then Mariona and Williamson dawdled, before finally clearing.
Arsenal’s first chance came on 11 minutes. After a good spell of possession, Little crossed deep for Foord, who headed back across goal, but wide.
Bonmatí then had a chance. Battle, free because Arsenal were doubling up on Graham Hansen, found Bonmatí in the box. She cut onto her left, opening the space for a shot, but Catley and Williamson blocked and Van Domselaar claimed.
Arsenal thought they’d taken the lead on 22 minutes. Fox and Maanum combined on the right hand side, with Fox slipping Maanum in behind. Maanum played a low cross across the box, and Parades put through her own net. Maanum, though, went early, and after a VAR check, the goal was chalked off.
On 27 minutes, Maanum ran onto an Arsenal clearance and shot from 25 yards. The shot was goal bound, but Cata Coll got a fist up and parried over the bar. From the corner, the ball came to Kim Little on the penalty spot, but she shot over.
On 31 minutes, Bonmatí darted through the middle and shot straight at Van Domselaar, who saved.
Rolfö was played in behind, but Foord, covering, put her cross out for a corner. A couple of minutes later, Pina was played in behind down the same side, behind Fox, but Williamson stood Pina up and won the ball back as she drove into the box.
Barcelona, though, were starting to cause Arsenal stress as gaps opened up. Fox, Little, and Williamson were all forced into some uncomfortable late ditch blocks and clearances.
Arsenal, though, were able to see out the danger to half time, and even had another half chance themselves after Mariona won the ball high up.
Pina shot from range in the 47th minute after Barcelona worked a short corner, but Van Domsealaar was behind the shot and saved comfortably.
Barcelona then hit the bar in the 49th minute. Putellas, Bonmatí and Pina combined, and Pina shot. Her shot looped off Fox and hit the crossbar. The rebound came to Graham Hansen, who set Bonmatí up for the flicked effort, but Van Domselaar grabbed the ball.
Paredes was booked in the 50th minute for a late challenge on Foord in midfield.
Batlle went close with a shot from the edge of the D, with her shot going just wide of the far post. The chances, though, were starting to come for Barcelona, who were forcing Arsenal back.
On 60 minutes, Maanum lost the ball, Putellas found Bonmatí, and she shot, with Van Domselaar parrying behind for a corner.
On 62 minutes, Salma Paralluelo replaced Pina.
Batlle shot from the inside right again, but Van Domselaar was behind it and claimed the ball after a slight bobble.
Kelly was booked for shoulder barging Putellas off the ball. Arsenal also had a penalty shout, as McCabe was caught by Batlle, but nothing was given.
On 67 minutes, Blackstenius and Mead replaced Maanum and Kelly, with Russo dropping into the 10.
Rolfö fired a dangerous low ball across the box, but Catley cut it out for a corner.
On 72 minutes, Mapi Leon slipped, and Blackstenius was onto it. She drove on, and with Mead in support, shot, with Cata Coll saving with her foot. Then, at the other end, Pajor ended just over.
Blackstenius forced Paredes to concede a corner on 74 minutes. The initial corner was cleared but Arsenal kept it alive. Mead cut onto her left and played the ball with her left. She found Blackstenius free and onside in the box, who took a touch and then fired into the far corner to give Arsenal the lead. 1-0.
Engen replaced Mapi Leon and Brugts replaced Rolfö.
Graham Hansen played a dangerous ball across the 6 yard box, but Williamson got there to clear.
Foord and Russo combined on the left, but Foord’s dangerous ball was cut out.
On 85 minutes, Lina Hurtig replaced Caitlin Foord.
Mead won a foul on 88 minutes, after Paralleulo caught her in the face.
In the 90th minute, Blackstenius was played in over the top. but with the ball bouncing, she lobbed over the bar.
7 minutes were added on.
Lotte Wubben-Moy replaced Russo in the 92nd minute.
In the 93rd minute, Williamson cleared another dangerous Graham Hansen cross away for a corner, and Arsenal cleared the danger.
Batlle won another corner in the 95th minute. Kim Little won the header, and then Fox’s clearance found Mariona, running down the other side of the pitch. She kept the ball, and then won the foul off Batlle.
Graham Hansen ran down the pitch, but Hurtig stuck with her and Kim Little tackled and won the ball. Barcelona went long and Wubben-Moy headed, and McCabe won a foul.
Barcelona won a free kick in their own half, they went short, and then the referee blew and ARSENAL WON THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE.
