Alessia Russo reacts to Arsenal becoming Champions of Europe

After Arsenal’s 1-0 Champions League Final win over Barcelona on Saturday evening, Alessia Russo stopped by the mixed zone to talk to a few of us.

On her emotions…
Absolutely buzzing, really buzzing. I can’t put it into words, it feels bloody amazing. I am being careful not to swear! It feels surreal right now but I had so much belief going into this game, we all did. We didn’t want to say it too much but we all had this feeling, we knew we could and we just had to go and deliver.

On why the team were so calm going into the game…
We knew we had done the work first and foremost, we knew we had a good game plan. We believed in it as players and we were excited and we have been enjoying this week, enjoying the build up and we wanted the game to come around to be honest.

On having to suffer during the game…
We did at times, we had to be really patient with our press, we had to run a lot and we had to be comfortable not having the ball.

*at this point the interview is interrupted as Leah Williamson gives Arseblog News a big hug. Katie McCabe then delivers several firm pats to Arseblog News’ head, which we believe were intended affectionately but were delivered with vigour*

We were able to do that, defensively we were solid.

On her tears at the final whistle…
I think everyone was crying, it means so much to us, to all the people involved in this club, everyone that is part of the journey, the fans, the back room staff that people don’t see, the kitchen staff that we work with every day, it means so much to everyone, that is what we were playing for today.

On this being the beginning of something for Arsenal…
For sure, massively. When you win things you want to win things even more and you also know you are good enough to do it. It was important to win today for many reasons, but now we want to win more. We want to start next year strong and compete domestically more so than we did this year and we want to win this trophy again.

On where this ranks in her career achievements…
It is very high, we are going to have a great party tonight!
