Caitlin Foord reacts to Arsenal becoming champions of Europe

After Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Barcelona in Lisbon on Saturday evening, Caitlin Foord stopped by to speak to the UK press pack in the mixed zone. A few of the questions are from us, but we were a bit of an emotional wreck and they weren’t particularly amazing questions so we won’t highlight them on this occasion!

On her emotions…
I can’t believe it but I just think the mentality from all of us out there was amazing, we wanted to defend for our lives and not give them a sniff. The blocked shots and clearances show you we didn’t think they were going to score, nothing was going to get through us, it’s insane I can’t believe it. I almost passed out at the final whistle, I was seeing stars but we deserved to win something this year, we have been so good and in this competition we have showed that we beat the best to get here and we beat the best to win, we deserve silverware and we got the best one.

On what the victory says about the team after the start to this season…
For us to be able to get here and turn things around and do it just shows what this team is about, the character we have and the resilience we have showed to get here. We wanted to defend, we worked hard to get back behind the ball when we had to and I feel like every single person did their job today and they weren’t getting through us.

On where it stands in her career achievements…
By far the best, to win something so special is what you work so hard for and we enjoy it.

On making so many fans so happy…
We can see it, for everyone that has followed us this season, the Gooners week in and week out, it’s for everyone. Everyone played a massive role to get us here and get us over the line, so we just have to thank them.

On the game plan…
The game planned out exactly as we expected it to, they wanted to overload us in the midfield so me and Chloe (Kelly) had to work so hard to come back and help the midfield out, keep them to one side which we did really well. They put crosses in and we knew we had the defenders to deal with that. I don’t know how many corners they had but we were never scared that was going to cause us problems. It was a massive, massive team performance from the defensive side of things. Defending crosses was like scoring a goal because we know how dangerous they are in those positions. Everyone we stopped was like scoring a goal, we knew if we could stop them our time was going to come and Stina did that for us.
