Arsenal striker Alessia Russo has been voted as the WSL Player of the Year by the Football Writers’ Association. Russo becomes the second Arsenal player to win the Women’s Footballer of the Year award, after Vivianne Miedema in 2020.
Russo has scored 12 WSL goals this season and is tied for the Golden Boot going into the final game of the season on Saturday against her former club Manchester United. She has also scored six goals in this season’s Champions League.
Manchester City’s Bunny Shaw was in second place with Russo’s Arsenal teammate Mariona Caldentey finishing third and Chelsea’s Millie Bright in fourth. FWA chair John Cross said: “Alessia’s performances, especially in the Champions League have been the stand-out from the season. She seems to have taken a huge leap since joining Arsenal and her overall game as well as her goals make her a special player. We’re delighted to be crowning her Women’s Footballer of the Year but hope that it’s not the last honour she receives this season with the Champions League Final at the end of the month.”
The awards dinner takes place in London on Thursday 22 May, it remains to be seen whether Russo will be able to attend with the Champions League Final against Barcelona taking place in Lisbon two days later.
