Contrary to public Arsenal discourse, an Arsenal legend was left impressed by Martin Ødegaard’s performance against Manchester United. The Norwegian led the Gunners to an opening-day win over the Red Devils, covering the most distance out of any player on the pitch. His contributions in the defensive third were also telling as only William Saliba managed to make more clearances during the encounter. Overall, the skipper put in a fairly commendable display and this sentiment is echoed by a former Arsenal player.
Merson praises Ødegaard
In his latest column for Sky Sports, Paul Merson gave a special mention to the Norwegian and thought he was “back to his best” in Arsenal’s one-nil win over Manchester United. He wrote: “Special mention for Martin Odegaard. I thought he was back to his best. There were a couple of times he didn’t have the options on the counter, and he also made a couple of wrong decisions, but he was so much better than last season. If he can maintain those levels that is a big plus for Arsenal”.
His remarks will come as a surprise to many. The Norwegian was heavily criticised by a section of the fanbase due to his poor attacking display as the Gunners lacked a cutting edge in the encounter. The player was guilty of giving the ball away in promising areas on a couple of occasions, but he looked sharper in what was a solid all-round performance.

Arsenal must improve collectively
Martin Ødegaard and Arsenal will have to improve considerably from that performance. They were nowhere near good enough as a collective unit and considering the run of fixtures coming up, they will have to improve as soon as possible. The Gunners face Liverpool and Manchester City, two of last season’s top three, within their next four games.
Coming back to Merson’s assessment of the skipper, do you agree with his remarks? Contributions are much appreciated in the comments.
