Mariona wins WSL Player of the Season

Arsenal midfielder Mariona Caldentey has been named the Women’s Professional Game’s WSL player of the year, which was voted for by fans.
The Spain international scored nine goals and registered five assists in the Women’s Super League this season and has been a huge part of the effort to get Arsenal to the Champions League Final in Lisbon.

Signed on a free transfer from Barcelona last summer, Mariona has quickly established herself as Arsenal’s key player. She also won the Arsenal Women Supporters Club and Mastercard Arsenal Player of the Season awards.

‘I’m super happy because I really enjoyed my first season here,’ said Mariona. ‘Everyone helped me. It was kind of easy to move from Barcelona. It’s a highly-competitive league but I have enjoyed it.’ Her Arsenal teammate Alessia Russo was also nominated, alongside Brighton’s Kiko Seike, Manchester City’s Mary Fowler, Manchester United’s Maya Le Tissier, Liverpool’s Olivia Smith and West Ham United’s Shekiera Martinez.
