What does Champions League snub mean for Gabriel Jesus at Arsenal?

Arsenal’s UEFA Champions League draw was revealed last week and fans will have been pleased with a favourable set of fixtures. The Gunners were drawn to play Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid, Olympiacos and FC Kairat at the Emirates Stadium, while trips await to Inter Milan, Club Brugge, Slavia Praha and Athletic Club. Arsenal begin their campaign against the latter in Spain on the 16th of this month, with their final group game against Kairat Almaty scheduled for January 2026. After a semi-final finish last season, the unveiling of the squad on UEFA for the league phase brought both excitement and questions. The inclusion of teenager Max Dowman on ‘List A’ raised eyebrows, but the absence of one particular name has proven more telling.

Jesus left out of Arsenal’s Champions League squad

Gabriel Jesus is recovering from an ACL injury sustained in January and has recently returned to individual training on the grass. However, the Brazilian was not included in the Champions League league phase squad, sparking speculation about his future. His return to training suggested he was nearing full fitness, but his exclusion tells a different story. The situation becomes even more confusing given Kai Havertz is now sidelined through injury, leaving Viktor Gyökeres as the only recognised centre-forward available.

The snub raises serious questions about Jesus’ role going forward. The forward was subject to transfer speculation earlier in the window and although he never came close to leaving, his future remains uncertain. Signed in the summer of 2022, he has two years left on his current deal and is still highly regarded by Mikel Arteta, but there are signs he could soon find himself on the periphery.

What next for Gabriel Jesus?

Jesus’ profile suggests he still has much to offer Arsenal, but his exclusion from the Champions League squad is a significant moment. It could indicate a change in direction for Arteta’s forward line as the club navigates the new campaign.
