Arsenal have completed the signing of Ecuadorian defender Piero Hincapie in a loan move worth £52 million, which includes an obligation to buy.
Initially, Hincapie was not part of Andrea Berta’s plans. Reports suggest the sporting director was not prepared to sanction another signing following the arrival of Eberechi Eze. However, with Jakub Kiwior requesting to leave, the club were forced to act in search of a left-sided defensive option.
Why Arsenal targeted Hincapie
Manager Mikel Arteta and Berta identified Hincapie’s versatility as a key factor. Comfortable playing either as a left-back or a left-sided centre-half, the 23-year-old brings tactical flexibility that appealed to both.
Arsenal initially hoped to strike a permanent deal but Bayer Leverkusen proved unwilling to sell at a price they felt undervalued the player. A swap proposal involving Kiwior was quickly rejected, leaving Berta to push for an alternative arrangement. Eventually, he convinced Leverkusen to agree to a loan deal with a purchase clause.

Arsenal’s belief in the deal
Transfer insider Ben Jacobs, via his YouTube channel, reported: “It is a loan with an initial option of £52 million. All parties, though, expect a purchase. So this is being viewed by Arsenal sources as pretty much a lock as a permanent signing, but officially it’s a loan with a buy option.”
From that, it is clear Arsenal are convinced by Hincapie. They believe he is worth the fee and, given the choice, would have signed him permanently this summer. Now, the challenge is for the Ecuadorian to live up to his reputation. If he succeeds, Arsenal’s left flank could be settled for years to come.
With Hincapie, Riccardo Calafiori, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Eberechi Eze and Gabriel Martinelli all available, Arteta has plenty of options to shape his left-hand side.
