Arsenal laid the groundwork for Martin Zubimendi’s summer move as early as January. At that time Andrea Berta had yet to join the club, and new reports suggest he may have preferred other targets upon his arrival. The Gunners eventually completed the long-awaited signing in July, unveiling Zubimendi in red and white months after a deal had already been agreed. Arsenal initially struck an agreement in principle to meet his release clause, before eventually paying €65 million to seal the transfer this summer.
Zubimendi had long been on Mikel Arteta’s radar, with interest dating back to when Edu Gaspar was still sporting director. Some reports even suggested Arsenal’s pursuit was partly responsible for his failed move to Liverpool last term, with claims that he had already been promised a switch to North London.
Berta’s alternative targets
According to The Athletic, Berta arrived at Arsenal when the Zubimendi deal was already set in motion. Had he been in place earlier, the report claims he would have considered other candidates. This could explain summer links to Sevilla’s Lucien Agoume and Atletico Madrid’s Pablo Barrios.
Berta has quickly shown his influence at the Emirates, particularly during the search for a striker. He identified Viktor Gyökeres as his preferred option and successfully convinced Mikel Arteta, underlining the strong working relationship the pair are already developing.

Zubimendi’s strong start
Despite Berta’s initial reservations, Zubimendi is proving to be an excellent addition to the squad. He impressed throughout pre-season and has started all three of Arsenal’s opening Premier League fixtures, slotting seamlessly into Arteta’s midfield – though he did receive some criticism for his display against Liverpool on Sunday.
Thoughts Gooners?
