Arsenal strengthened their squad during this transfer window by adding Noni Madueke, despite already having Gabriel Martinelli, widely regarded as one of the Premier League’s standout wingers. Over recent seasons, Martinelli has consistently demonstrated his quality, establishing himself as one of Arsenal’s most influential players and a key figure in their attacking unit. His energy, work rate and creativity have made him central to Mikel Arteta’s plans, and he has often been described as a model professional.
Despite his importance, speculation emerged earlier this summer suggesting that the Brazilian could be sold. However, Arteta remains keen to keep him in North London and to continue working with him as part of Arsenal’s long-term project.
Madueke’s Arrival and Competition for Places
The arrival of Madueke has inevitably increased competition for the wide positions. While Bukayo Saka’s role on the right remains untouchable, the focus has shifted to the left wing, where both Martinelli and Leandro Trossard now face pressure for their starting places. Madueke was given the nod ahead of Martinelli in Arsenal’s recent victory over Leeds, a decision that underlined the depth Arteta now has at his disposal.
Discussing the situation, Isaan Khan of the Daily Mail highlighted the differences between the two wingers, noting: “Gabriel Martinelli was dropped for Noni Madueke, a move that had already seemed on the cards despite Arteta’s clear liking of the Brazilian. He has stood by him despite often struggling to make a real impact in the final third. Of last season’s 38 league matches, Martinelli started on the bench just twice. It reflects his standing in the team.
“Madueke’s end product on Saturday could have been better, though there was a clear directness in his darts forward, attacking the opposition without fear, which has often been missing on that left side with Martinelli. He can play on both flanks, so is a viable option for either while Saka is side-lined.”

Strength in Depth for Arsenal
Madueke’s arrival offers Arsenal greater tactical variety and competition, qualities essential for a team competing across multiple fronts. While Martinelli’s status as a proven performer is unquestionable, Madueke brings a different dynamic, with his fearless and direct style providing another dimension to Arteta’s attack.
Rather than a threat, this competition could prove invaluable, ensuring both players push each other to higher levels. For Arsenal, having two high-calibre wingers available on the left is a sign of progress and further evidence of the depth Arteta is building within his squad.
